CHIRPS3 Precipitation Data in the Dataset API
CHIRPS3 is now available in the Dataset API, replacing CHIRPS2 with an updated algorithm on the same resolution, coverage and update schedule.
CHIRPS3 covers 50°S to 50°N at 5 km resolution, with a daily time step and an update delay of 6-7 days, with the final corrected dataset following up to two months later. Resolution, coverage and update behaviour carry over unchanged from CHIRPS2; the algorithm behind the estimates is new.
Where it fits
CHIRPS combines infrared satellite imagery with station observations. That makes it a useful cross-check against model precipitation in regions where station density is low and a single model estimate carries more uncertainty.
What changes for existing integrations
CHIRPS2 has been discontinued and is no longer available. Integrations referencing it need to move to CHIRPS3. Note that the archive does not carry over: CHIRPS3 starts in 2001, while CHIRPS2 reached back to 1981. Work that depends on the 1980s and 1990s needs a different precipitation source.
