CHIRPS3 Precipitation Data in the Dataset API

CHIRPS3 is now available in the Dataset API, replacing CHIRPS2 with an updated algorithm on the same resolution, coverage and update schedule.

CHIRPS3 covers 50°S to 50°N at 5 km resolution (interpolated to 0.05°), with a daily time step and an update delay of 6-7 days, with the final corrected dataset following up to two months later. These figures carry over unchanged from CHIRPS2, only the underlying algorithm is new.

Where it fits

CHIRPS combines infrared satellite imagery with station observations. That makes it a useful cross-check against model precipitation in regions where station density is low and a single model estimate carries more uncertainty.

What changes for existing integrations

CHIRPS2 has been discontinued and is no longer available. Integrations referencing it need to move to CHIRPS3.
