Radar Coverage Extended Across Asia and Central America

meteoblue has extended radar coverage to Central America, Southeast Asia, China, Eastern Europe, Korea and Japan, and now uses that radar to correct precipitation forecasts in those regions.

The expansion integrates radar networks from Windy alongside the existing meteoblue coverage. Regions added include Central America, Southeast Asia, China, the eastern Himalaya, parts of Eastern Europe, Korea and Japan.

Radar-based forecast corrections

In the covered regions, radar observations now correct the precipitation forecast in real time. For Asia the correction also covers the previous 24 hours, so the nowcast and the current day stay consistent with each other. Radar resolution for the Asian region is 2.5 km.

What to expect from the corrections

Radar correction improves far more cases than it degrades, but it is not uniform. Radar quality varies between networks, and convective situations in Southeast Asia can occasionally push a correction in the wrong direction. The precipitation mask for a newly added region also needs time to build before coverage looks complete.
