Swiss Hail Climatology Added to the Dataset API

meteoblue has added the MeteoSwiss hail climatology to the Dataset API, with hail size by return period and mean annual hail days for Switzerland at 1 km resolution.

The dataset provides two sets of values. Hail size is given for return periods of 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70 and 100 years. Mean annual hail days are given for two thresholds: days with hail of at least 2 cm and days with hail of at least 4 cm.

What a return period means

A 50-year return period value is the hail size expected to be reached or exceeded on average once every 50 years at that location. It is a statistical measure derived from a long record, not a forecast for any particular year.

Coverage and limits

Coverage is Switzerland only, delivered on the Swiss national projection at 1 km resolution. The data is static, so it carries no time dimension and does not update with the forecast cycle. The dataset is listed under Natural Hazard in the dataset interface.
